Peroneal Tendon Repair Post-Operative Protocol

Weeks 0 – 1

  • Short leg splint
  • Non-weightbearing
  • Sutures out at first post-operative visit

Weeks 2 – 4

  • Continue non-weightbearing

Weeks 4 – 6

  • Begin weightbearing in the walking boot
  • Start PT
  • Dorsiflexion/plantarflexion exercises

Weeks 6 – 8

  • Continue walking boot
  • Add ankle inversion exercises

Weeks 8 – 16 

*GOAL* Preparation for return to athletic activities

1. Full non-painful ROM

2. No pain or tenderness

3 Satisfactory physical exam

  • Add ankle eversion exercise; emphasis on muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility
  • Discontinue walking boot
  • Initiate return to sport program
  • PROBLEMS / QUESTIONS

  • Let the operators know you just had surgery by your doctor and ask to speak with a medical assistant.  If you should need to call after hours, the answering service will get your information and have the on-call physician return your call.  If the matter is urgent, proceed to the emergency room.
